Lemonthyme Lodge

Today, Friday, is our last full day in Tasmania and we spent it driving from Hobart to Lemonthyme Lodge. We stopped at most of the historic old towns along the Midland Highway (Oatlands, Ross & Campbelltown). All these little towns have convict made buildings, bridges or other structures and are very old places – at least by Australian standards.

The Convict Built Bridge at Ross

We took a number of back roads across the bottom of the Great Western Tiers to get to Deloraine for lunch. We chose to stop at the same Deli that we had visited on our first day in Tassie, as we liked their menu and thought that their food was very nice.

After lunch we drove through Mole Creek and on a road that took us over the Mersey River to Moina. This was the same road that we last used to get to the start of the walking track to the Walls of Jerusalem National Park and it bought back a few memories of my last bushwalking trip there. The weather was similar to that which we had on the first few days of that walk as well. It was only 3 degrees and some drizzly rain that certainly would have been falling as snow at higher altitudes.

We had pre booked some accommodation at Lemonthyme Lodge which is a very beautiful wilderness retreat. Our cabin has a very warm and comfortable lounge room and a spa in the bathroom with a very large window that looks right over the forest. It was too wet to do any of the walks around the lodge so I used my spare time to catch up with this blog.

Our Final Day in Tassie

Yesterday, we only had a short trip of less than 100 kilometres from Launceston to Devonport where we would catch the ferry back to the mainland. We took advantage of the time that would have on this short driving day to see some last minute sights and visit some friends. My old mate Leon or […]

George Town and Beaconsfield

George Town sits on the east bank of the Tamar River near its mouth on the north coast of Tasmania. It was a short drive for us today to explore this area and its history. The town is now a modern administrative centre but historically it was an important place – the third oldest British […]

A Change of Plan

Our day started with some excitement. We were awoken by thunder and lightning at around 5.00 am. Rolling thunder continued until we were packed up and ready to leave St Helens at around 9.30 am. It wasn’t raining when we left but, wow, did that change! Our plan for the day was to drive west […]
